Durability

Tin is a sturdy material that can withstand heat and moisture, making it ideal for kitchen environments.

Aesthetic Appeal

Tin backsplashes come in a variety of patterns and finishes, allowing for customization to fit any decor style.

Easy to Clean

Tin is non-porous, making it easy to clean and maintain. It does not absorb stains like other materials.

Reflective Quality

The metallic nature of tin can help to brighten a room by reflecting light.

2. Are tin backsplashes expensive?

Tin backsplashes are generally considered a cost-effective option compared to materials like stainless steel, glass, or stone. The cost can vary depending on the complexity of the design and the finish.

3. Can I install a tin backsplash myself?

Yes, one of the advantages of tin backsplashes is their ease of installation. Most homeowners can install without professional help. However, for more complex patterns or finishes, or if you are not confident in your DIY skills, hiring a professional might be a better option.

4. Can you put tin backsplash over an existing backsplash, like tile?

With so many different surfaces, we thought we’d break down some different backsplash situations.

Textured Walls

If the texture is 1/8” or less, you can install our panels over it. Use nails and adhesive.

Tiled Backsplash

Existing tile, especially tile with a glossy finish like subway tile, will need to be roughed up with sandpaper before installing tin tile. We recommend a high quality construction adhesive like Power Grab by Loctite

Use construction adhesive to install your tin tiles to the backsplash. There are several different types and quality levels. One of our favorites is Power Grab by Loctite.

7. What maintenance is required for a tin backsplash?

Tin backsplashes require minimal maintenance. Regular cleaning with a soft cloth and mild soap is usually sufficient. It is important to avoid abrasive cleaners or pads which can scratch the surface. We recommend Simple Green for a deep clean as needed.

8. Can a tin backsplash be painted?

Yes, tin backsplashes can be painted. This allows for customization according to your color preferences or when updating your decor. Be sure to clean the surface thoroughly and use a 100% acrylic paint for best results.

9. Are there any drawbacks to a tin backsplash?

Noise

Tin can bounce noise, which might be a consideration in a busy kitchen. Backsplashes generally cover a very small area and don't have a significant impact on noise.

Susceptible to Denting

Although durable, tin is softer than some other metals and may dent if hit with a large, hard object like a cast iron pan.

Corrosion

If not properly sealed or maintained, tin can corrode over time, especially in environments with high humidity or exposure to acidic substances. All backsplash panels at American Tin Ceilings are properly sealed (except Unfinished panels).

10. How do I choose the right tin backsplash for my kitchen?

Consider the overall style of your kitchen, the colors of your cabinetry and counters, and the amount of natural and artificial light in the room. A highly decorative pattern might work well in a traditional or vintage kitchen, while a simpler, brushed metal finish might suit a modern aesthetic better.

11. What finishes are available for tin backsplashes?

Tin backsplashes are available in a range of finishes, including powder-coated premium colors and antiqued or patinaed Artisan. Each finish offers a different vibe, from sleek and contemporary to rustic or classic.
