The Art of Flex Spaces: Designing for Function and Style

As the way we live and work continues to evolve, so do the spaces we inhabit. Homes and businesses alike are embracing the concept of flex spaces—versatile areas designed to adapt to different needs throughout the day.

Whether it’s a home office that doubles as a guest room, a dining area that transforms into a creative workspace, or a commercial space designed for multiple functions, flexibility is key.

What Makes a Great Flex Space?

A well-designed flex space is more than just a multipurpose room—it’s an intentional fusion of aesthetics and practicality. Thoughtful layouts, smart storage solutions, and adaptable furniture help define the space’s usability, while architectural details like tin ceilings bring in timeless charm and visual cohesion.

When designing a flex space, consider the following.

Versatility

How will the space be used throughout the day? A space that transitions from a home office to a relaxing lounge should incorporate furniture and design elements that support both functions.

Aesthetic Flow

A well-curated space feels intentional, even when serving multiple roles. Use design as a unifying element to tie together different functions, creates a cohesive, polished look.

Acoustics & Ambiance

Consider acoustics as you plan a flex space. Whether you need a focused work environment or a cozy retreat, managing noise can help create the right atmosphere. Tin ceilings are an excellent way to do that. Check out our acoustic panels.

Flex Spaces in Home Offices

With the rise of remote and hybrid work, the home office has become one of the most important flex spaces in modern living. These rooms often need to shift between professional and personal use—perhaps functioning as a study during the day and a guest room at night.

Case in Point: Scott Arthur Millwork’s Office/Bedroom Flex Space

The designers at Scott Arthur Millwork believe that “designing stylish spaces to compliment your distinctive lifestyle is what truly makes a home custom.” Their creative designs move between home office to guest room, sitting room, and library.

One of their recent triumphs is a library with a rotating hidden bed (a variation on a murphy bed).  The library shelves around the perimeter of the room leave space for an office that easily converts into a guest bedroom. Foliage print wallpaper and a bronze tin ceiling in a concentric squares pattern (Pattern #1) enrich the design and make it feel like a special retreat.

“The client had already picked out bronze sconces for the basement office and we suggested bronze tin tile to further that aesthetic,” explains Shawn Tiltgen, owner of Scott Arthur Millwork. They chose a simple pattern that would easily accommodate puck lighting to bring more light to the space.

“We designed a space that functioned as an office and guest bedroom and could go between the two options with as little effort as possible, which is why we used the hardware that we did,” says Tiltgen “This style of Murphy bed turns, so even when switching from bed to bookshelf, nothing has to be removed from the shelves.”

Beyond functionality, the aesthetic was key. The homeowner saw this style of bed online but desired a better quality and a deep green finish rather than the standard white melamine. He wanted the surrounding wall unit to seamlessly conceal the bed.

“It only took one meeting for our client to decide on our initial suggestion of the deep forest green melamine, complemented by the dark oiled walnut and bronze tin tiles,” Tiltgen shares. “The result was a space that feels rich, masculine, and effortlessly refined.”

This thoughtful combination of materials and design elements resulted in a highly functional, visually stunning home office that effortlessly transitions between work and leisure.
